The Accident
The Three Mile Island incident occurred on March 28, 1979 at about 4:00am in Dauphin County Pennsylvania. It all happened when the 2nd reactor stopped functioning and a PORV (pilot-operated release valve) was stuck open and released radioactive gases in the atmosphere. Not one person was harmed during this accident but animals have been tested in a ten mile radius and result have shown a decrease in their reproductive rate. The Fukushima Daiichi accident occurred on March 11, 2011. After the tsunami and earthquake hit Japan, four out of the six reactors operating in the nuclear plant had a meltdown. Both natural disasters caused the reactors to stop working thus overheating them, radioactive elements plutonium and caesium stored in the upper part of the reactor melted and burned down to the middle compartment then to the lower one till finally reaching the water inside the plant caused by the tsunami. Radiation was released into the water and air surrounding the nuclear plant causing an alarm for potential danger.
